Carhenge: An Exact Replica of Stonehenge Made With Cars

Nestled in the heart of the American Midwest lies a peculiar sight that never fails to capture the imagination of those who stumble upon it: Carhenge.

Located just north of Alliance, Nebraska, this unique attraction is a whimsical homage to England’s ancient Stonehenge, albeit with a modern twist.

The Origin Story

Carhenge came into existence in 1987, thanks to the creative vision of Jim Reinders. Inspired by the ancient stone monument in England, Reinders sought to pay tribute to his father by creating a similar structure using vintage automobiles. With the help of family and friends, he meticulously arranged 38 cars into the familiar circular formation, aligning them with the solstice and equinox points, just like their prehistoric counterparts.

The Installation

What sets Carhenge apart is its use of cars instead of stones. When you approach the site you will immediately notice a circle of cars, some standing upright like monoliths, others laid horizontally, all anchored firmly into the ground. The cars vary in make and model, ranging from vintage Cadillacs to rusted-out pickups, each contributing to the eclectic charm of the installation, and all identical in color.

Exploring The Site

Walking among the towering car pillars, you and your kids will marvel at the ingenuity behind Carhenge. It’s not just a static display; it’s a living artwork that evolves with time, as the elements weather the cars and add to their character. Carhenge embodies the spirit of roadside Americana, celebrating the offbeat and the unconventional.

30 minutes is plenty of time for this stop, and you will find a small parking lot right in front of the installation. But whether you’re a history buff, an art enthusiast, an Americana expert, or simply someone with a penchant for the peculiar, a visit to this roadside attraction is a must!
